Compare WavePay with PayPal, Paynow, 2Checkout, Flutterwave and doing it yourself
How WavePay compares with integrating PayPal, Paynow, 2Checkout (Verifone) or Flutterwave directly, with a card-only processor, or with building each payment rail yourself.

Integrating each rail yourself means one integration, one reconciliation feed and one failure mode per wallet and card scheme; WavePay replaces them with one checkout call and one ledger, at the cost of depending on WavePay for the rails it enables.
A card-only processor cannot take a mobile-wallet payment, so buyers who hold EcoCash or OneMoney but not a card cannot pay; WavePay adds those local rails to Visa, Mastercard and PayPal behind the same checkout call.
Integrating PayPal directly gives you one rail and its own reconciliation; WavePay puts PayPal, Zimbabwean wallets, cards and crypto behind one checkout and one ledger, and lets a merchant connect their own PayPal account so PayPal still pays them directly.
Paynow is the Zimbabwean gateway WavePay itself uses for EcoCash, OneMoney, InnBucks, Telecash, O'mari and ZimSwitch; integrate Paynow directly if you need only Paynow, and use WavePay when you also want PayPal, crypto, subscriptions, licensing and one ledger across rails.
2Checkout, now Verifone, is a merchant of record that sells on your behalf and handles tax; WavePay is not a merchant of record: it routes buyers to payment rails, can use 2Checkout as one of them where it is enabled, and adds Zimbabwean wallets, crypto, licensing and one ledger.
Flutterwave is a pan-African payment gateway with its own country coverage; WavePay concentrates on Zimbabwean rails, PayPal and crypto behind one agent-ready API with licensing built in, so choose by where your buyers and your business are.
How to choose
WavePay is a checkout, licensing and ledger layer. It does not replace the provider that takes the money: it puts the providers behind one call. Choose a provider directly when you need exactly that provider, you want no layer between you and it, and you are happy to build reconciliation, retries and licensing yourself. Choose WavePay when you need several rails (Zimbabwean wallets, cards, PayPal, crypto), subscriptions or licence keys, or an integration an AI agent can run on its own.
Statements about other providers describe their public positioning; provider terms, fees and country coverage change, so confirm them on the provider's own pages before you decide.
